Description

This was created by processing the individual images captured during live stacking of NGC6553 for the Grand Canyon Star Party.  I captured 102 images but had to toss a number of them due to clouds moving through.  This was a stack of 89.  It is a large nebula complex formed from the same vast molecular cloud as M8 (the Lagoon Nebula) which it is just to the east of.  It is a star forming region and the hot new stars cause the Hydrogen to fluoresce, giving the red color to the clouds.  There are also dark clouds of dust seen in the interior and creating a dark halo around the clouds.  You can also see areas of faint blue here and there in the clouds which are reflection nebula.  This image frame is approximately 3 full moons wide and at about 5,00 ly away would span roughly 1330 ly.  NGC6559 is actually just part of this cloud.  It's the bright cup, toward the top, next to a couple of very bright stars that are radiating energy and outpouring stellar winds that have both carved out the cup and made it so bright.
